Is it cold and dark or has ‘The Black Road’ (published by Image) just arrived? Set in the lands of the Vikings where Brian Wood’s words and Garry Brown’s art set the scene for our journey,
where Christians and Norsemen live an uneasy life, where often Iron is king, the story starts with Magnus The Black being hired to escort Cardinal Farina up The Black Road a “path built of misery, sorrow, blood and bile”, a hazardous journey in itself let alone with a Christian in tow.
Even though this is only the first issue it’s hard not to be drawn to the character of Magnus The Black, he’s dark and engaging with an appetite for understanding the Christian ways, which somehow makes this man mountain more cultured than a norseman should be.
Brian Wood’s writing is lavish and cold, fitting for this time period, while Garry Brown’s superb artwork adds to the roughness of the lands with strongly drawn characters and almost sketch like strokes add a moody shadow through out
There is a lot to like about this first issue, in fact it’s one of the best I have read in a long while, it’s going to have you hooked right from the start without giving too much away while at the same time you can’t help but feel there is so much more to come
Overall summing this up is pretty simple
Storyline is great
Artwork is amazing
Does not give too much away
Read it
